Exigence

Before this course, I often confused exigence with purpose. The two are totally different. Purpose is what you want to gain with the content of the writing with your audience. Exigence is your reason for caring about the topic in the first place.

I built this definition in this class by completing the homework that was given for certain assigned readings. The class had to identify rhetorical elements and we would come together and have a discussion.

In my scientific narrative, “An Apple a Day, Keeps the Grade an A”, I write a story about how a mother is struggling with her daughter to bring her grades up after they have moved to a fast-paced city. It becomes clear that its because the daughter has not been eating breakfast, therefore weakening her academic performance. The exigence for this narrative was as a child, sometimes I would have a low performance at school because I was never able to eat breakfast or grab a quick snack. The purpose of this narrative was to inform parents, guardians, and even school faculty of the importance of eating for children.
